Analysis of Concrete Bridge Girders Strengthened with Frp Laminates under Service and Extreme Loading Conditions

چکیده

The project is a continuation from fiscal year 2004-2005. Previous work aimed at developing new analytical tools for analysis of RC beams strengthened with FRP laminates. The models were used to analyze several test specimens of RC beams and to investigate the corresponding failure mode, and whether it is due to CFRP fracture, debonding, or concrete crushing. Current work focused on using the existing model to conduct a thorough analytical evaluation of current ACI-440 design specifications for RC beams strengthened with CFRP laminates. Based on these studies, a new equation for the limitation set on the strength of FRP sheets in order to prevent debonding failure has been proposed. In addition, the model has been expanded to simulate the behavior of concrete girders reinforced with FRP bars. In this case, analytical studies have been performed in order to conduct an evaluation of current ACI-440 design equations for development lengths. The effect of different parameters such as concrete strength, confinement, FRP strength, and bar diameter has been investigated and a new equation for development lengths is currently being proposed for monotonic loading conditions. Currently, the study is also focusing on evaluation of design specifications under cyclic loading conditions, typical of seismic excitations.

Analysis of Concrete Bridge Girders Strengthened with Cfrp Laminates under Service and Extreme Loading Conditions

Externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates are a feasible and economical alternative to traditional methods for strengthening and stiffening deficient reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete girders as shown in Fig. (1). Although extensive research has already been undertaken to investigate the behavior of CFRP strengthened bridge girders, the majority of work condu...

Assessment of Frp Composite Strengthened Reinforced Concrete Structures at the Component and Systems Level through Progressive Damage and Non-destructive Evaluation

There is growing use of FRP composite materials in the civil infrastructure for rehabilitation of deficient bridge components including deck slabs and girders. However assessment of the effectiveness of rehabilitation over time and monitoring the progression of damage or change in load paths between the structural components, caused by sequential strengthening of the components, has not been un...

THEORETICAL AND NUMERICAL STUDY ON THE STRENGTHENED STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALLS BY FRP LAMINATES

In this paper, nonlinear behavior of strengthened steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) by FRP laminates theoretically and numerically has been investigated. In the first part, a new method, “the composite-plate frame Interaction (C-PFI) method”, has been introduced to predict the shear behavior of the composite steel plate shear wall systems (CSPSWs). In the second part, several models of one-story ...

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Two Fixed-End RC Beams Strengthened With CFRP Bars in NSM Method

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material is currently being produced in different configurations and widely used to strengthen and retrofit concrete structures and bridges. It is also possible to apply other strengthening methods without changing the appearance or the dimensions of the structure. Near Surface Mounted (NSM) is a recent strengthening method using CFRP bars (rods or laminate strips...

Effect of Link Slab on Seismic Response of Two Span Straight and Skew Bridges

Highway bridges are frequently constructed as simple span structures with steel or concrete girders and a cast-in-place concrete deck, spanning from one pier to another. At each end of the simple span deck, a joint is provided for deck movement due to temperature, shrinkage, and creep. Bridge deck joints are expensive and pose many problems with regard to bridge maintenance. Elimination of deck...
